warm-weather adventure gear i love

May 09, 2025 by all aflutter in Blog, Gifts For...

OUR LITTLE family loves to adventure ALL year-round. We camp and raft and hit the beach in the warmer months and ski in the winter. Our older son was 6 months old when he camped for the first time. Our younger son was 8 weeks. We would set up the little portable crib in the tent or in our pop-up and let the fresh cool mountain air and sounds of nature lull our babies to sleep. It was awesome. And as they’ve gotten older, we’ve been able to get back on the river. We bought a raft a few years ago and have been lucky to have some incredible adventures, paddling our way through stunning country that’s only accessible by boat. The kids [there are usually like 10 of them] are outside all day, paddling their own duckies, chasing frogs, engineering elaborate aqueducts on shore, stargazing and playing games until they snuggle into the tent and pass out hard with the sound of the river creating the best natural white noise. There are no screens. No phones. No plans. No stuff. Nothing to do but whatever they can imagine. And then they wake up the next day and do it all again. It’s 100% pure priceless magic.

OVER THE years I have tested, rejected and curated some adventure gear that I love. This list doesn’t include the super practical stuff like tents and coolers, but the ‘extra’ stuff that just makes everything more comfortable. After all, I don’t want to be distracted from the scenery or the sound of the kids’ laughter because I’m wrestling with subpar gear. If you’re looking for stuff for more ‘refined’ travel, check out my Gift Guide to Travel for favorites. And if you have any questions, reach out, I’m always here for you. xo

some of my favorite warm-weather adventure gear

~~ This Cotopaxi 60L Gear Hauler Tote is one of THE best gifts I’ve ever received and the best pieces of gear I’ve ever owned. I use it constantly to drag food to the mountains when we travel and all the extra loose gear on road trips; you know, shoes, hairdryer, hats… stuff you NEED, but doesn’t fit anywhere else. It’s indestructible, holds SO much stuff, is actually easy to carry and wipes clean. I love it so much that my husband bought me the 30L size, too. If your travels are often by car, near or far, this is your new BFF. ~~ $125

~~ A pair of good sandals is essential for any warm weather adventure and I looked for nearly a decade before I discovered the very best ones for me. I have tried on like 200 pairs of Chacos, Keens, Tevas and every other sandal that people love, but none of them were a good fit for me. My foot would always sit sort of awkwardly sideways in the footbed. And then I discovered Bedrock Cairn Adventure Sandals and the clouds parted and the sunshine came through. Dramatic? That’s how much I love them. They fit perfectly, had almost zero break-in period, are actually cute [they come in 8 colors] and are totally bomber. I wear them camping, in the river and ocean, on hikes, to the grocery store and everywhere else in between and just love them. My son was about to steal mine, so I bought him a pair, too. ~~ $105

~~ Ok forget adventuring, they should just issue a Leatherman Micra to every mom out there. It’s teeny tiny and has actually useful tools in it, like the clipper that I use all the time, even if just to open a Smoked Salmon Strip for my son [why is it sooo hard?]. I keep it in my car or bag during normal times, then stash it in either my hip pack or PFD when adventuring. It’s just a super useful thing to have around. ~~ $54.95

~~ I bought these stainless steel cups a few years ago for juice, drinks, oatmeal or anything else while we’re camping. They’re super durable, haven’t rusted and are easy to clean out [they don’t hold on to grease like plastic]. I love the colored silicone sleeves that keep track of who’s is who’s. They’re simple and just work. ~~ $19.99

~~ My Cotopaxi Daypack fits all the stuff I need for a mid-sized adventure [plus it’s so so cute], including rain jackets, water bottles and snacks for the kids [and for me]. They have lots of style and size choices depending on your preferences. I LOVE their bright Del Dia collection, which empowers the artisan who makes each pack to choose the colors they want to combine from leftover industry fabric. Each one is unique and super fun. For most styles, you can decide to be ‘surprised’ by the color or choose your own from their stash. LOVE their Hip Packs, too. ~~

~~ If I’m leaving the house for more than 2 hours, I’m leaving with at least a few Stasher Bags [or a huge pile if we’re traveling]. They are ENDLESSLY useful, especially when you’re out and about. I use them for everything from snacks to cosmetics to meds to games to stowing trash [like the core from the apple you had in there]. I have every size they make and I use them all for different things. I LOVE them. Really. Buy a bunch, you won’t believe how useful they are. Plus they’re virtually indestructible, leak-proof and can be chucked in the dishwasher when you get back [and find that week-old apple core]. ~~ from $7.99

~~ You guys already know how much I love my Aloha Hip Packs, which I bring on every adventure big + small. But I also adore their Pouches. When I travel, I bring two Small or Mid Pouches, one filled with clean undies and one empty that I use to keep track of the dirty ones. It works brilliantly to separate them and you never have random pairs of skivvies flailing around. ~~ $32

~~ You also need a good baseball hat, I almost never leave home without one, especially in the summer. I love this Happy Rays Trucker [I have it in black], it really is just so sweet and smily. Check out my collection of cute Sun Hats for lots more ideas. ~~ $38

~~ I love my Nomadix Original Towel so much that everyone in my family now has one. They’re awesome for travel [we brought ours to Hawaii], camping, rafting or the neighborhood pool. These quick-dry beauties are made from recycled bottles, resist odor, sand + pet hair AND pack down super small and light. There are a ton of really cool prints to choose from and they come in an Ultralight version if space is really an issue. I also have a Mini that I keep in my car for post-sweaty runs and hikes. They’re awesome and a fantastic gift if you’re looking. ~~ from $27.95

~~ My husband and I both love our Stio Hylas Hooded Pullover. It’s UPF 50, super lightweight, not too tight and the hood keeps sun off your face either for protection or when you’re just feeling super crispy. ~~ $89

~~ I grabbed a Pelican Micro Case on a whim a few years ago when heading out for a big river trip and I love it. We have a big family box for all the major stuff, but I felt like mama ‘needed’ my own so I could easily access my phone and charger without having to disrupt the carefully-packed boat ecosystem. It’s super petite, so that’s mostly all that fits in there along with an extra pair of sunnies, chapstick, and my slender card case. It has a little carabiner to clip to a lash or wherever you need it and, most importantly, it works and is totally bomber. The fact that it’s kind of adorable is just a bonus. It’s perfect for any scenario where you need to keep your treasures dry and from getting crushed. ~~ $29.95

~~ I know everyone has a favorite water bottle or two [or 10], but this Hydro Flask 32oz Wide Mouth is my go-to for adventures for one super specific [maybe super dorky] reason… the mouth of the bottle where you put your sweet lips is covered by the lid so that no dirt or sand or river water gets on there while it’s knocking around. You get a clean drinking surface every time. So there. Plus, it’s a Hydro Flask, so you know it’s indestructible and will keep your water cold for as long as possible. That’s worth the price to me. ~~ $44.95

~~ I’m a ‘just in case’ kind of gal and I like to feel prepared, especially out in the woods where there is very little else you can control. So I jam this Patagonia 6L Black Hole Cube with ALL the meds and drag it on our adventures. We have a legit first aid kit for serious emergencies, but this is the thing that’s going to keep everyone as comfortable as possible. Whether you have poison ivy, diarrhea or a sunburn, I have a thing for that and I stash it all in this awesome bag. It’s weatherproof, incredibly durable and has a big mesh pocket on either side of the zipper that opens wide to keep things organized, accessible and visible. I love it. ~~ $45

~~ Ok, lean in, I’m going to tell you a secret… these Eagle Creek Packing Cubes are the single greatest travel item we own. They look a bit dorky I know, but they are EVERYTHING for keeping it all together, especially when you’re living out of a tent, camper or boat [or a different hotel room every night for weeks]. Each family member gets a Cube or two for their clothes and then we chuck all the cubes into a duffle or dry bag for transport. When we get all set up at camp, the Cubes act as a neat little ‘drawer’ for each person and all the crazy stuff is contained. It’s MAGIC. ~~

~~ We use this Rumpl Everywhere Mat outside our tent to stow everything that doesn’t fit inside or is too wet or dirty to come in. The bottom is waterproof, it packs up super small and it has little loops in the corners so you can stake it down. It also repels sand and dog hair. Basically it’s awesome. You can also use it as a blanket at kiddo sporting events or picnics. It would make a truly fantastic gift. ~~ $79

~~ Every gal needs a good sun hat and this Outback Woven Sun Hat is [extremely similar to] mine. It’s hand woven in Mexico and has a little cotton band on the inside to protect your skin and to soak up the sweat. And it’s super cute no matter where you’re headed. ~~ $68

end of the rainbow cookies

February 14, 2025 by all aflutter in Recipes, Gifts For...

YOU KNOW I’d never miss a chance to celebrate a holiday, but when it comes to St. Patrick’s Day, I’m not much of a green food gal. All of those green bagels and green beer and green pancakes kind of weird me out a bit. So I kept this one super simple and gussied up some store-bought sandwich cookies to make super festive and cute ‘End of the Rainbow’ cookies for my little leprechauns in just a few minutes. They were totally wowed and it was SO easy, so total win-win. I hope your littles [or bigs] love them, too. GIFT A LITTLE HAPPINESS. xo

End of the Rainbow Cookies

INGREDIENTS

  • Vanilla sandwich cookies of your choice [I used Glutino to keep them GF]

  • Frosting [I used Miss Jones for a ‘healthier’ option]

  • Green food coloring

  • SPRINKLES! I used a mix of rainbow jimmies, green + white sanding sugar, white non-pareils and those cute little gold ‘coin’ ones, but you can obvs use whatever you want.

DIRECTIONS

  • Mix the frosting with a few drops of green food coloring until it’s a shade you like

  • frost half of the top and sides of the sandwich cookies [I didn’t do the bottom side]

  • SPRINKLE away. That’s it! You have adorable cookies in no time flat.

  • Enjoy with your favorite little leprechaun.

kids books about art

February 10, 2025 by all aflutter in Gifts For...

THERE ARE two things that I’ve almost always said ‘yes’ to with my boys since they could talk; books and art supplies. I’m a total sucker for both, partly because I love them and partly because I sincerely believe there’s no greater gift than the opportunity for further creativity, imagination, wonder and expression. And while you most certainly don’t need ‘stuff’ to explore any of those things, the addition of open-ended supplies and books that inspire are extra fun tools on the journey. I love to watch my younger son when he gets a little spark and starts pulling out the bins of popsicle sticks, hot glue and pipe cleaners to create ALL kinds of ships, guys, secret bases and other things that pop into his mind. It’s awesome.

AND BOOKS about visual art, artists and creativity are like a double bonus because the expose kids to all the different mediums and types of art that they could never have even dreamed up. They learn about how the individual artists see the world and their journeys to becoming the people we know them as today. There are SO many amazing books out there about artists, art, creativity and art appreciation written specifically for kids and they’re super inspiring. What better way to learn not only about different types of mediums and methods, but about different types of people, too. Who knows, maybe it’ll be the spark that inspires your own new future artist. Or at the very least may just fill a kiddo’s heart with wonder and curiosity and there’s no greater gift than that. For more on amazing art supplies, check out the Gift Guide to Art Supplies for Kids + Teens, it’s FULL of beautiful things that are sure to get those creative juices flowing. And if you love a kid whose creative expression comes out in food, check out the Gift Guide to Baking Stuff for Kids + Teens and you may get a sweet treat in return. GIFT A LITTLE HAPPINESS. xo

fill ‘er up

January 28, 2025 by all aflutter in Gifts For...

EASTER for our family is a sweet day to be together and to recognize and celebrate nature’s waking from hibernation. It’s the beginning of a new season and a lovely chance to spend a minute taking in everything that’s emerging and growing and blooming after a long winter with all the hope of what’s to come. Plus, it’s just really fun. The brightly colored eggs and baskets and bunnies and candy just feel happy after a good stretch of seeing lots of brown and white and grey. So, though we don’t ‘celebrate’ in a spiritual way, it’s still a special day and a much-anticipated signal that we’ve ‘made it’ through the winter (though if we’re real, it could def be snowing).

AND WHEN there’s an opportunity to blow out the fun for my guys, you know I’m in. So I’ve already started thinking about Easter eggs and baskets and treats. Today, I’m going to share a few of my PRO TIPS for filling Easter eggs. It can be super daunting and I really hate to just jam a bunch of junk in them. I’d always rather find fewer things that I know my boys will actually like and won’t end up in the landfill by dinner. Then I fill in with candy or money to make a big pile.

IF YOU have little littles, you’re SO set. There are TONS of little bits for little kiddos that make epic Easter egg filling. Standard party favors like bouncy balls or finger monsters [my little still loves these silly things] can for sure be fun, but also look for bulk packs of toys in themes that they love, like these Minecraft figures or Thomas Minis and TAKE THEM OUT of the packaging. There. That’s my super secret weapon. It seems so simple, but a friendly reminder can’t hurt. Take treasures out of the box or the mass of shrunken plastic that requires a chainsaw to penetrate and suddenly you have lots of tiny toy bits that would fit perfectly inside an Easter egg. These cutie Peppa Pig figures, Micro Machines, Polly Pockets and Barbie clothes are all excellent examples (def check the size to make sure they’re as tiny as they look and will fit in your eggs). You can also unbox a small Lego set and put a few pieces in each egg so they have the whole collection at the end.

MY ANIMAL-loving son was OBSESSED for several years with Safari Good Luck Minis (aka ‘teeny tiny animals’ in our house), which are perfect egg filler. The Safari Toobs are also gold and there is a huge range of themes from literally every kind of animal to Friendly Fairies to Tools to Human Organs. My little has amassed bunches of these over the years because he loves them and they have a set for just about anything he’s into at the moment (they’re AWESOME restaurant and travel toys, too). Some of the contents are bigger than others, so again, just be mindful if you’re intending to stuff them into an egg, otherwise you can always put them into the basket. If your little likes to craft, you can put loose pom poms, googly eyes and fun beads in the eggs so they end up with a nice little collection of supplies to work with.

ALSO CHECK out the popular toy-style advent calendars. If you can find a theme that your kiddo would love (and isn’t chock full of Christmas trees and Santa), you can pull everything out of the cardboard and use the figures for eggs. You’ll be an Easter hero. Just don’t try to pass off old snowman chocolates or yo'u’ll be fired from Bunny duty. I did the Star Wars Micro Force calendar last year and it was fantastic (there were a few Christmas ones in there, but you can just save them for stockings later). These Squishmallow and Monster Jam ones looks awesome, too.

AND THEN there are the older kids. T(w)eens [especially boys], can be much trickier to wow with little bits. I’m totally there myself, but have a few ideas... Candy and money are obvs always a great option, but there are a couple other things that lots of biggies would find amusing. Small fidgets, like Hedgehog Rings, Monkey Noodles, Magnetic Rings or Teeny NeeDohs are fun and would all fit in an egg. If your big kid is into gaming, you could put some gold coins in a few eggs that can be traded for currency in the world they love (Robux or Minecoins or whatever). Critter, food or cube puzzle erasers are good distractions (Japanese Iwako makes lots of cute themed packs). Or these poop ones, because…t(w)eens. Vinyl stickers for water bottles, skateboards and devices can be jammed into eggs and come in designs that appeal to literally EVERY interest under the sun from hot cars to basketball to cute ‘stuff.' A quick search will almost surely find something that your kid is into. Mochi Squishies are super cute. You can also stuff in little jewelry, a fun hair tie or lip balm if it’ll fit.

ONCE YOU’VE filled your eggs like a rock star Easter Bunny, there can be other logistics to grapple with, too. If you’re having an egg hunt with a group of kids that are super varied in age or have vastly different interests, you can try color coding the eggs. One color is candy or coins that’s open game for anyone, then choose a different color for each kiddo or age/interest that’s filled with the special stuff. You’ll up their challenge by having them search just for specific eggs and everyone will end up with treasures that they love.

SO WITH just a wee bit of forethought, creativity + thinking outside the packaging, you can crush this Easter egg filling job and find treasures that will last beyond the big day. Hop Hop. xo

my travel beauty essentials

January 25, 2025 by all aflutter in Gifts For...

MY LITTLE family travels A LOT. Sometimes near, sometimes far; on the road or by plane; in a five-star hotel by the beach or a 4-man tent by the bank of a river, we like to switch it up and do it all. We are always trekking up a highway to somewhere, skiing most weekends in the winter and camping or rafting in the summer. Depending on the nature of our destination, sometimes I have to pack light + minimalist and sometimes I can drag ALLLL the stuff I ‘need.’ And my Boy Scout nature has me wanting to be prepared for all of it. I’m always on the lookout for the perfect solution [aka. The Right Tool for the Job], especially for travel, and I’ve found a bunch of them when it comes to my toiletry kit. All of them are TSA-friendly, field-tested and loved.

I’VE ALSO included some travel-sized versions of products I love. I try not to buy a bunch of minis that end up wasted when there’s only a little left at the end of an adventure, but these are all things that I use at home anyway, so they’ll be used up even if there’s a gap in our trips. And many of them come in reusable packaging, so you can just fill them back up when they run out. Of course, all of these lovely things also make awesome gifts for your wanderlusts, business travelers or grads setting out on a big adventure. Let me know your favorites, too, I’m always refining my ‘system.’ GIFT A LITTLE HAPPINESS. xo

Travel Beauty Essentials

~~ I loathe using those crunchy over-bleached washcloths on my face, so I started bringing my own. Geometry’s Waffle Washcloths and Luxe Washcloths are super compact, soft and dry fast. Plus they’re pretty. I have and love both. Use my links for 15% off your purchase at Geometry.~~

~~ Cadence Capsules have solved every issue I’ve ever had with crappy travel containers. They’re leakproof, easy to clean, perfectly sized and pack well. I use them for cosmetics, supplements, jewelry + meds and they’re absolutely perfect. ~~

~~ This Travalo Atomizer is a total game-changer. I use one for perfume and one for facial mist. It’s easy to fill, leak-proof, TSA-friendly and comes in lots of colors so you can tell what’s what. ~~

~~ When we’re camping and have no access to water to clean my face [and dusty feet], I rely on Micellar Facial Towlelettes to get all the grit off. ~~

~~ There’s ALWAYS space for Tweezerman Mini Slant Tweezers and I ALWAYS have a need for them. ~~

~~ You just have to have a nail file handy in case of jagged nail emergencies and I love the graduated grit of these Tweezerman Filemates. My favorite part is the little plastic carrying case it comes with so you don’t scratch up anything in your bag. ~~

~~ These Port + Polish Pill Cases are perfect for travel. I have one for my morning supplements and a separate one for the nighttime set. They don’t hold a ton, so if you’re carrying a lot of big pills, it might not be the best solution, but for a few medium to smalls, it’s perfect. ~~

~~ Sometimes you just need a little extra help to see those random hairs and this Tweezerman 10X Lighted Mirror is great. It’s fairly compact, but not tiny, lights up and has little suction cups on back to attach to a wall or mirror for hands-free hair hunting. ~~

~~ I have several of these little metal Pill Capsule Pill Holders for ibuprofen on-the-go. They’re the perfect wee size to stash in a pocket or hip pack when you’re not bringing your whole bag along. I gave one to my migraine-prone teen for his ski jacket so he’s never stranded without meds. ~~

~~ I prefer this Manicurist Complete Cuticle Serum for travel because it’s not oily or greasy, so you can put it on anytime you need a little hydration [like a long flight] without worrying about the mess. ~~

~~ You guys know how much I LOVE my Stasher Bags for a zillion things, especially travel. But did you know that the Stand-Up Mid is THE perfect size for carry-on toiletries? Plus you can just wipe it out if anything leaks. Learn more about why I love them and my other favorite uses here. ~~

~~ I love this Topo Designs Dopp Kit for its roominess and triangular shape, which keeps it from rolling away. ~~

~~ This Tobiq Toiletry Bag is an organized traveler’s dream, it has a zillion slots and pockets to keep everything together. Plus it’s made by a fellow CO mom. Love mine. ~~

~~ Aloha Dopp Kits are perfect for just dumping a bunch of stuff inside the big open space. They’re ‘splash-proof,’ durable and super cute, too. ~~

Travel-Sized Clean Beauty

~~ Tata Harper’s 5 Minute Facial for Megawatt Glow includes minis of two of my very favorite products for gentle exfoliation, making it perfect for taking to dry climes ~~

~~ The Lolavie Restore and Protect Travel Kit comes with the 4 staples. It’s perfect and ready to go wherever you’re headed. ~~

~~ Bathing Culture Body Wash is my fav and the li’l aluminum bottle is perfect for refilling ~~

~~ Zizia All Balm will keep your dry hands, elbows, knees, lips and any other part hydrated on the plane or in dry destinations ~~

~~ My favorite Cocoshine Whitening Toothpaste in a mini size perfect for TSA ~~

~~ The 15 ml pot of GOOPGLOW Microderm Exfoliator is just the perfect size to toss into your travel bag ~~

~~ 100% Pure Bright Eyes Masks come individually packaged, so they take up zero space in your kit ~~

~~ Take this little Le Prunier Plumscreen SPF 31 anywhere you’re going to stay protected ~~

~~ I’d never go anywhere without my Alpyn Beauty Willow & Sweet Agave Lip Mask and fortunately, it’s already perfectly sized for travel ~~

~~ This li’l travel-sized Tower28 MakeWaves Mascara takes up no space at all and will have you ready for anything ~~
